A Wild Ride in a Torque SP
It was a news story that made headlines around the world. Last June, Ben Carpenter, a 21-year-old man with Duchennes Muscular Dystrophy from Kalamazoo, Michigan, was out for an afternoon ride in his Invacare Storm Series® 3G TorqueTM SP power wheelchair. When crossing the street at a busy intersection that day, he passed in front of a semi truck that was stopped at a traffic light. The light turned green and the truck driver began to drive forward, unaware that anyone or anything was in front of him. Ben and his Invacare wheelchair became entangled in the truck's front grille, and were pushed nearly two miles down Red Arrow Highway in the town of Paw Paw, Michigan, at speeds of up to 50 miles per hour. Miraculously, Ben and his wheelchair survived, and media outlets around the world reported the story of Ben's "wild ride."
In February of this year, Invacare donated a new wheelchair to Ben. On August 19, Invacare unveiled a new display in the world headquarters showroom dedicated to Ben's amazing experience. The display features Ben's now-famous wheelchair with its original
tires, along with a photo of Ben surrounded by a collage of various news articles and a video monitor playing TV news clips of his "wild ride." It is a a testament to the durability of the design of Invacare's power wheelchair products.
